Messy Play Idea

Get Ready!

  • Cornstarch- at least 2 cups
  • Water
  • Food coloring- optional (Add to water or to mixture)
  • Tray- optional (for easier clean up)

Get Started!

Pour cornstarch into a bowl and slowly add some water until thick and hard to stir. Gently rub a finger across the surface of the mixture. It should feel smooth. Now stop and rest your finger on the surface. If it sinks, it’s ready! The more water you add the less resistance you will get from the mixture. Give each child a handful. Try: to keep it moving; watch it melt; let it spread then make shapes, lines, letters, or try to drive a car through to it. If the child is not ready to touch this - Mix it in a zip loc bag and play on the outside of the bag.

Writing Practice - Story Starter!

We all know that handwriting practice is essential, but it can also be boring and frustrating for both children and adults. So in each issue of “PFOT Tips and Tricks” you’ll find a story starter. It may be a cartoon or sketch with no caption, or an incomplete sentence that needs to be finished. We will also give you some points to be used to spark the students own creativity, hopefully motivating them to extend the practice session. So here’s a story starter… Copy and finish this sentence.

“We were on vacation, riding through the jungle, when suddenly....”

Hints to be used only if the writer needs them:

  • Who was there? What did they say or do?
  • What did you… hear… see…. smell … taste… touch
  • How did you feel? How did others feel?
  • Then what happened?
  • How did it end?
  • Would you want to do it again/happen again? Why or why not.

Back to Basics: New Tips for Old Toys

Blocks and beads; Balls and bean bags; Scissors and crayons; Pegs and playdough. These low tech toys have always been used to help form the foundation for development. They are probably hiding in your closet or at the back of the play shelf right now. So let’s dust one off and take a new look at activities to do! (Please visit “Tips and Tricks Townsquare” to post and read other ideas.)

Let’s re-visit: Stringing Beads!

Copy a pattern:

  • From a picture, or an actual string of beads
  • Make a coded pattern (R = red or # 5= red) to follow.
  • Have the child make a code for you.

Positions:

  • Skip the table and try sitting on the floor, standing, kneeling, or lying down.
  • Add movement to the activity. Maybe move into <more>

Customer Questions:

Question:

My son’s therapist recommended that we buy an air filled seat cushion. What are they used for and what’s the difference between them?

Answer:

All air filled seat cushions are dynamic. They allow for ongoing vestibular (movement) input, (in a manor acceptable in the classroom) that helps fidgety or under aroused students maintain an appropriate level of <More>
